Giving a bar a shelf life
A handmade bar wrapped in plastic film looks like a sample. The same bar in a printed sleeve or a small carton looks like a product you'd pay a premium for, and gift. Packaging is what moves an artisan soap from a craft-fair table to a boutique shelf, and it's where the ingredient list, the scent, and the story finally have somewhere to live.
There are three common formats, light to heavy.
Pick the format to the price point
- Belly band: a printed paper sleeve around the middle of the bar. Cheapest, fastest, shows most of the soap.
- Folding carton: a small box that fully encloses the bar, protecting the scent and giving you every panel to print.
- Rigid box: a wrapped gift box for sets or a hero product.
A belly band suits a value line; a carton suits a standard retail bar; a rigid box suits a gift set or a flagship scent.
Finishes and stock
Soft-touch laminate, foil, and emboss all lift a carton into gift territory. For a natural line, kraft stock and uncoated paper do the opposite job just as well, signaling honest and unfussy. A die-cut window lets a shopper see and sometimes smell the bar.
