Folding cartons that look right on a crowded shelf

A shopper standing in a supplement aisle gives each box about three seconds. In that time your folding carton has to read clearly, look like it belongs at its price, and feel solid enough to pick up. Get the stock, the print, and the structure right and you win the pick-up. Get them wrong and the product never leaves the shelf, no matter how good what is inside it.

Folding cartons are the printed paperboard boxes behind most retail products: the cosmetics box, the cereal box, the supplement carton, the toothpaste box. They ship and store flat, then pop or fold up at the point of packing, which makes them cheap to warehouse and fast to fill. That flat-shipping efficiency is why they are the default for any product sold in volume on a shelf.

Who uses folding cartons

Cosmetics and skincare, supplements and vitamins, packaged food and snacks, pharmacy and over-the-counter products, tea and coffee, candles, and small electronics all run folding cartons as their primary retail box. Anywhere a product needs to sit on a shelf or peg and communicate a brand at a glance, this is the format. They also work as secondary packaging that holds a bottle, a tube, a blister pack, or a pouch.

For a brand moving from a soft pouch or a bare bottle into proper retail, the folding carton is usually the first real packaging investment, and it is the one that makes the product look ready for a store buyer.

Materials and construction

Folding cartons are made from paperboard, typically 14pt to 24pt thickness depending on the weight and size of what they hold. Common stocks include:

  • SBS (solid bleached sulfate): bright white, takes color beautifully, the premium choice for cosmetics and food
  • Kraft / CCNB: natural or recycled-look board for an earthy, sustainable feel
  • Coated stocks for sharper color and a smoother finish

Construction styles cover the standard reverse-tuck and straight-tuck cartons (the everyday box), auto-bottom cartons for heavier contents that snap into a locked base, seal-end cartons for food, and tuck-top boxes with hang tabs for peg display. We send a free dieline so you can confirm the structure folds and locks the way you expect before anything prints.

Sizes and how to choose

Cartons are cut to your product, so the size question is really a fit question. Measure the product or its primary container, allow a hair of clearance so it slides in without forcing, and decide whether you need a hang tab, a window, or an insert. Our reference footprints run from small cosmetic and supplement sizes near 6×4×2 in up through larger food and multi-pack sizes.

If the product is fragile or needs to face a specific way, add a printed paperboard insert or a fitment. A carton that holds the product square also photographs better and survives shipping inside an outer carton.

Printing and finishes

Full-color CMYK print is standard, and paperboard takes it crisply. On top of that you can finish the carton with:

  • Matte or gloss lamination
  • Soft-touch coating for a premium hand feel
  • Spot UV gloss over a matte field to highlight a logo
  • Foil stamping for metallic accents
  • Embossing or debossing for tactile detail
  • Die-cut windows to show the product (pair with a film patch or leave open)

For food and cosmetics, a soft-touch matte carton with a spot-gloss or foil logo is a reliable premium look that does not overspend.

Minimum order, turnaround, and how ordering works

The minimum is 30 units. Folding carton manufacturers typically quote minimums in the thousands because the print setup is the same whether you run 50 or 50,000, so a 30-unit floor is built for brands testing a launch or running a limited edition. You can prove the packaging on a small batch before committing to a production run.

Turnaround is about 10 days from approved artwork. Send your artwork (or a concept we help build), we return a dieline and a digital proof, you approve, we print, cut, and crease so the carton ships flat and folds up clean. Pricing starts near $0.22 per unit and drops sharply with volume, which is what makes cartons so economical at retail scale.

Sustainability

Paperboard is recyclable and widely accepted curbside, and we offer recycled and FSC-certified stock with water-based inks. Skip the plastic laminate and choose an uncoated or kraft board if a fully recyclable carton matters to your brand. For the outer shipping layer that holds your cartons, pair them with corrugated boxes.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer custom folding cartons in small runs?

Yes, from 30 units. That is far below what most folding carton companies require, so you can run a custom printed carton for a launch or a seasonal SKU without ordering thousands.

Can you make a custom carton box in a specific size?

We do. Cartons are cut to your dieline, so we build to your exact product dimensions rather than forcing it into a stock size.

What is the difference between a folding carton and a corrugated box?

A folding carton is single-layer paperboard for retail presentation. A corrugated box has a fluted layer for strength and shipping. Cartons go on the shelf, corrugated goes on the truck.

Do you do custom printed folding cartons with foil or spot UV?

Yes. Foil stamping, spot UV, soft-touch, emboss, and die-cut windows are all available and can be combined on a single carton.

Are you a folding carton supplier I can reorder from easily?

Once your dieline and artwork are approved, reorders are quick and the per-unit price improves as your volumes grow.

What thickness of paperboard should I use?

For most retail cartons, 18pt to 24pt SBS gives a solid feel without overspending. Lighter 14pt board suits small, light products; heavier stock suits bigger boxes or anything that needs to feel substantial in the hand.

Getting the artwork right

A carton lives or dies on its artwork as much as its structure. Build your design to the dieline we send, keep important text and logos away from the fold and crease lines, and extend background color past the trim edge so there is no white sliver after cutting. We review every file before it prints and flag anything that sits too close to a crease or a glue tab. Getting this right the first time is what keeps a launch on schedule, since a clean file moves straight from proof to press.
