Window Boxes
Die-cut window boxes that show the product while protecting it.
Shoppers want to see what they are buying. A window box gives them a clear view of the product while the carton keeps it clean and protected on the shelf.
- Die-cut window in any shape, backed with clear PET film
- Full-color printing around the window
- Folding-carton or rigid construction
- Great for food, toys, cosmetics and candles
We cut the window to any shape and back it with crystal-clear film.
“Our takeout boxes stopped leaking and started advertising. Grease-proof board plus one bold color on kraft — simple and it works.”
“The free dieline saved us. Our first supplier wanted $400 for structural work; here it came with the quote, and the sample folded perfectly first try.”
Window boxes: let shoppers see what they're buying
A shopper standing in front of a shelf wants one thing above all: to see the product. Photos and copy help, but nothing closes the gap like an actual view of the thing inside. A window box gives them that. A clear die-cut panel shows the product while the carton keeps it clean, protected, and faced forward on the shelf. You get the trust of a visible product and the protection of a closed box at the same time.
The window is just a shaped hole in the carton, backed with crystal-clear film so dust and fingers stay out. Everything around it prints in full color, so the box still carries the brand, the ingredient panel, and the shelf pitch. It is one of the most direct ways to sell, because the product does most of the talking.
Who uses window boxes
Any category where seeing the product drives the sale leans on window boxes. We print them for:
- Food and bakery: cookies, chocolate, pasta, gourmet treats
- Toys, where parents and kids both want to see the actual item
- Cosmetics and soap, showing color, texture, and shape
- Candles, where the vessel and color are the selling point
- Electronics accessories and small hardware
The format is also a favorite for gift and seasonal lines, where the product itself is attractive enough to be the display. If your product looks better than any photo of it, put a window on it.
Construction and the window film
Window boxes build on either folding-carton paperboard for lighter retail goods or rigid board for premium presentation. The carton is die-cut, scored, and folded like any tuck-end or auto-bottom box, with one extra step: a window is punched and a clear film is laminated behind it.
That film is usually PET, chosen because it stays crystal clear, resists yellowing, and takes a clean fold without cracking. We back the window with PET as standard. The window can be any shape: a simple rectangle, a circle, a product silhouette, or a custom cut that frames the item. The only constraint is leaving enough carton around the opening to keep the box rigid, so a window that is too large on a flimsy stock will need a heavier board.
Sizes and how to choose
Size the carton to the product first, then place the window where it shows the best angle of the item. For a candle, that is usually a front panel window at the right height to show the wax and the vessel. For cookies, a generous front window that shows the whole arrangement.
Our standard footprints run from small cosmetics sizes up to larger formats around 15×12×5 in, with custom dielines for anything in between. Think about where the window sits relative to how the box faces on the shelf, and whether the product needs an insert to hold it in view rather than slumping below the window line. We supply a dieline and proof so you can check window placement flat before printing.
A practical tip: leave a margin of at least a quarter inch of solid carton on every side of the window. The film is laminated to the inside of that margin, so a window cut too close to a fold or an edge loses its glue surface and the film can lift. On smaller boxes, an oversized window also costs you rigidity, which is why a candle box with a tall window sometimes needs a heavier board than a plain carton of the same size would. We will flag any of this on the dieline before you commit.
Printing and finishes
The print wraps the carton in full-color CMYK, framing the window with your branding and any required labeling. Because the eye goes to the window first, the surrounding panels should support it, not fight it. A clean layout around a clear window almost always outperforms a busy one.
Finishes are soft-touch, gloss, and kraft. Gloss gives a food or toy box a bright, appetizing pop under store lighting. Soft-touch reads premium for cosmetics. Kraft window boxes pair a natural board with a clear window, a combination that works well for organic food and handmade goods. Foil and spot gloss can frame the window or highlight a logo.
Minimum order, turnaround, and ordering
Minimum order is 30 boxes, low enough to test a product or a seasonal SKU before committing to a full run. Turnaround is about 10 days from approved artwork, with a free dieline and proof on every order. The proof step matters here because window placement and film fit are easy to get slightly wrong on screen and obvious to fix on a flat proof. To order, start a quote with your product dimensions and your preferred window shape and placement.
Sustainability
The paperboard carton is recyclable and runs on FSC-certified stock with water-based inks. The PET window film is the one non-paper element, and it is a small panel that can be separated for recycling where facilities allow. For brands prioritizing full recyclability, keeping the window modest and the board kraft keeps the footprint low while still showing the product.
Frequently asked questions
What is a window box? A carton with a die-cut opening backed by clear film, so the product is visible while staying protected inside a printed box.
What is the window made of? Clear PET film as standard. It stays crystal clear, resists yellowing, and folds without cracking.
Can the window be a custom shape? Yes. We cut windows in any shape, from a simple rectangle to a product silhouette, as long as enough carton remains around the opening to keep the box rigid.
Do you make custom window boxes for food? Yes. Food and bakery are among the most common uses. We offer food-safe handling and gloss finishes that make baked goods and chocolate look their best.
Can I get a kraft window box? Yes. A kraft carton with a clear PET window suits organic and handmade lines and keeps the board fully recyclable.
