Door hanger sizes: standard dimensions and hole specs
Door hangers come in three working sizes, and the right one depends on how much you have to say and how many doors you're covering.
The three standard sizes
3.5 × 8.5 inches is the slim economy format. Four of them cut from one press sheet, so it's the cheapest per door. Room for a logo, one offer and a phone number, which for a lawn service or a locksmith is the whole message.
4.25 × 11 is the standard and the most printed size in the format. Half a letter sheet, enough space for a service list, a coupon and a map. If you're unsure, this is the one.
4.25 × 14 is the jumbo, mostly used by restaurants because a takeout menu actually fits on it.
The hole is a spec, not an afterthought
The die-cut hole runs about 1.25 inches across with a slit to one edge. It doesn't stretch over the knob; the slit lets the hanger slip around the knob's narrow neck, then the card settles flat against the door. Arch-top and hook-style cuts exist, but they all obey the same rule: keep text and logos at least a quarter inch clear of the hole and slit, because that area takes the stress every time the door opens.
Stock, bleed, and the wind test
Print on 14pt card minimum. Thinner stock flutters in a breeze, folds against the first storm door, and telegraphs cheap. Add the usual 0.125 inch of bleed per side. And if you want the hanger to do double duty, a perforated bottom section detaches as a coupon or a business card, in which case size that section at the standard 3.5 × 2, covered in our business card size guide.
Quick answer
Pick 4.25 × 11 unless budget says 3.5 × 8.5 or a menu says 4.25 × 14. 14pt stock, 1.25 inch hole with slit, quarter-inch clearance around the die-cut. Then head to custom door hangers to get them printed.
