What is the size of a birthday card?

Most birthday cards you buy in a shop are the same size, which makes them easy to mail. If you are designing or printing one, here are the dimensions to work to.

The standard birthday card size

The most common birthday card is 5 x 7 inches when folded, known as A7. It is the default for a reason: it feels generous, it stands up on a shelf, and it fits a readily available A7 envelope (5.25 x 7.25 inches).

To print a 5 x 7 folded card, you start with a 10 x 7 inch flat sheet and fold it once down the middle.

Other birthday card sizes

  • A6 (4.5 x 6.25 inches): a slightly smaller, everyday card
  • A2 (4.25 x 5.5 inches): a compact card, common for a quick note
  • Square (6 x 6 inches): a modern look, but check postage, as square cards can cost more to mail

Designing one

Build your artwork to the flat size (twice the folded width), keep important text clear of the fold, and extend any background color past the trim edge so there is no white sliver after cutting. Then match it to an envelope with about a quarter inch of clearance.

Where it fits

The 5x7 birthday card is part of the broader greeting-card family; for the full range of sizes and their envelopes, see our guide to greeting card sizes.

The quick answer: a standard birthday card is 5 x 7 inches folded (A7), and it fits an A7 envelope.
