Hang tag sizes: standard dimensions and uses
A hang tag is small, but its size sends a signal, too big and it overwhelms a delicate product, too small and there's no room for the brand. Getting the dimensions right is most of the job.
Here are the common hang tag sizes, what each one suits, and how to choose.
Common hang tag sizes
There's no single legal standard, but these are the sizes printers and brands use most:
- 1.5 x 3 in — mini/jewelry tags, small items, minimal info
- 2 x 3.5 in — the most common apparel tag, close to a business-card proportion
- 2.5 x 2.5 in — square tags, modern and balanced
- 2 x 4 in — tall tags with room for a story or care info
- 3 x 5 in — large tags for premium goods, blankets, bags
Rectangular is the default, but square, rounded-corner and die-cut shapes are all common, the shape is part of the branding.
Match the size to the product
The tag should be proportional to what it hangs on:
- Jewelry and small accessories — mini tags (1.5 x 3 in) so the tag doesn't dwarf the piece.
- Apparel — 2 x 3.5 in is the workhorse; enough room for logo, size and price.
- Bags, blankets, homeware — larger tags (2 x 4 or 3 x 5 in) that match the scale of the product and hold more copy.
- Premium goods — a larger, thicker tag signals value on its own.
Stock and thickness
Size isn't the only decision, the weight of the card matters just as much. Thin 14pt card is fine for a light price tag; 18-24pt feels substantial and premium in the hand. Natural kraft reads eco and artisan; bright coated stock takes vivid color; adding a foil logo or an emboss lifts any size into premium territory.
The hole and the string
Almost every hang tag has a drilled hole for attachment. Place it with enough margin from the edge (about a quarter inch) so it doesn't tear out. Then choose how it attaches:
- String — classic, cheap, natural.
- Ribbon — premium, good for gifts and boutique apparel.
- Elastic loop — quick to attach, no tying.
- Plastic barbs — the fastest for high-volume apparel.
Use both sides
Whatever size you pick, print both faces. Front: brand, product name, price. Back: care instructions, materials, size guide, a QR code, or the maker's story. A two-sided tag costs almost nothing more and turns a price ticket into a small piece of marketing.
When you're ready, our custom hang tags come in all these sizes and shapes with string and foil options. For adhesive branding instead, see paper tags.
